Passion, Sensuality, and Food

"It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love,
are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think
of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I
am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the
love of it and the hunger for it… and then the warmth and richness
and fine reality of hunger satisfied… and it is all one."

~ M.F.K. Fisher, from The Art of Eating

"To be sensual, I think it to respect and rejoice in the force of life, of life itself, and to be present in all that one does, from the effort of loving to the making of the bread."~ James Arthur Baldwin

There are many types of people in this world who see food as simply fuel.  Something to not taste and nor savor.  Just to eat because they have to, or just have it because it's around, affordable (not that, affordability is entirely bad...But that's for another day, another topic), and quick.

Then there are people that either know how to cook the food, want to enjoy the food and sensualize the taste of food.  What I mean by sensualize is to see, taste, smell, feel (with their fingers and/or their tongue), as well as on their palate.

Do I think that food replaces sex?  Or sexual?  No.
I think of it rather as a play of the senses.   While I am making this food, in a way, I am also making this for others.  The very act of making food is done with passion, sensuality and love.  I know that when I am truly focused on a dish nothing else really matters as long as the dish comes out the way I would like it to turn out...With the best expectations.  If not...Try and try again....Why?  Because I care.

Sometimes the best dishes are those that take the most tender loving care....Even quick dishes take time from their preparation to the table.  Not everybody gets that.  One has to have the proper ingredients, measurements etc for the dish to come out the way that the cook and/or chef is pleased as well as the people consuming the food.

Then again, not everybody gets that their meat or vegetable may come from a farm or a processing plant.  If one doesn't care about where there food comes from, how it gets there, why it starts from point A to point B then you can't necessarily care about your food.

Food is apart of security as a need...And love...As an expression.  Sensuality is part of the process of making the food...As well as eating it.

A Pie For Mikey

While I do not know Jenny Perillo personally, I do remember reading her twitter, when the sudden loss of her husband occurred.  He had left behind his wife and his two little girls.  She had requested in her blog to share it with those we love.

I will do so as love and life are delicate matters that should be celebrated, remembered, and appreciated.

I know, for me, I've always had a hard time verbalizing my emotions into words....Unless they be written.  So, I normally do the next best thing.  I do.

So this, is my tribute to Mikey, to my audience, and to those whom I hold near and dear.

You may find her recipe on her website.

Affairs Of The Heart

Love and food go hand in hand, as in my experience, I 'show' my love through food.  Nevermind that I love food to begin with but I love to share it with the people I love.  But what do you do when you just hit that emotional wall that just stops you from doing what you love?  Or stopped you from what you once loved?

I remember a few weeks ago that the boyfriend and I were at an apple orchard and we were talking about cooking.  You see, his father left his mother when my boyfriend turned 18 and she turned into a bachelorette for the next 15 or so years.

His mother used to cook a lot when he was growing up and he enjoyed her cooking, as every child tends to love their parent's cooking.  But when his father left her.....  She stopped cooking.  Or specifically speaking....According to the boyfriend...She stopped cooking well.  She lost her touch.  Even though she has a new boyfriend...Things just weren't what the were.

I know that I'm 28 and I have much to learn.  I have hit that wall before.  I couldn't cook the way that I wanted to, and I couldn't work out without breaking down.  What do you do when you put your heart and soul into...Say a relationship....And you lost your touch?

I know, that when I had hit that low (although not quite at the same level), it took me a lot of time to regain myself.  To build myself up again.  What was the first dish you cooked?  I know for me it was my macaroni and cheese.

That was probably the dish for me because that was one of the very first dishes I had made.  No, I'm not talking from the box.  I'm not talking about using Velveeta either.  I use real cheese, and every version is never the same.  I had used Fannie Farmer 13th Edition Paperback by Marion Cunningham as a general guideline in making my macaroni and cheese.

I hope to never lose my touch with cooking.  I hope to always have it with me through all of life's instances.
